Ascoli Piceno

The city was founded in the 11th century BC by the Picenes. Legend has it that they were guided by a woodpecker, which later gave its name to the “Piceno” region. The city has undergone significant changes over time, passing through various historical periods—from the Romans to the Lombards, from the Middle Ages to the era of free communes, and then coming under the control of the Papal States in the 15th century. It still preserves many intact testimonies from the Roman, medieval, Renaissance, and papal domination eras. Ascoli Piceno has a very extensive historic center, which is entirely built in local travertine. Among the most admired cities in central Italy for its artistic and architectural wealth, it retains several noble towers and bell towers, earning it the nickname “city of a hundred towers.”
